When it comes to quality meat, freshness can be a concern. We understand that not offering any fresh never frozen meat options may be disappointing.
While we try to carry everything our customers desire here at SPUD, there are the occasional technical constraints that prevent us from carrying certain products.
From an operational standpoint, space in our coolers is limited. Space is allocated based on what our customers order, which means we do not have the spare room available for items that do not have a high demand.
Selling fresh meat also comes with proper sanitation and rotation due to limited shelf life. Depending on demand, this could lead to increased food waste due to a lack of sales.
Our mission is to use innovation and technology to reduce environmental impact while creating a safe and sustainable food ecosystem for all. This means we aim to find new ways to make our food system more inclusive, equitable, and less wasteful!
Bringing products like fresh meat to our sites also has logistical challenges regarding vendors. Previous attempts to bring in fresh meat found we simply do not have the sales to support stocking it, and with the ordering time and turnaround for delivery, we were not getting the best dates out of the product.
All of our products are sourced with people and the planet in mind. We are committed to having the lowest food waste in Canada, and unfortunately offering fresh meat does not feasibly support this goal.
That being said, we are currently working through the numerous constraints that would not make this an effective program. Keep watching the website as we have lots of exciting things to come!
